Brown horse wearing blue plaid fly sheet and fly mask

You can help your horse avoid the annoying effects of flies by using a combination of horse clothing and topical treatments like horse fly repellent. For effective methods of reducing the fly population on your farm, refer to How to Control Flies on the Farm.

  • Fly sheets have an open weave mesh to keep bugs off a horse's body. Some models are coated with horse fly repellent for added protection.

  • Fly masks, sometimes called fly bonnets, are made of see-through mesh. They keep flies from landing in horses' eyes and causing infections. Styles vary: some cover ears and extend to the nose, and some are lightweight for use over bridles during riding while others are sturdier for turnout and horseplay.

  • Ear nets, also called fly hoods or fly bonnets, keep flies from bothering a horse's ears during riding. Made of crocheted yarn or yarn/fabric combinations, they are worn over the ears with a flap under the browband. Fringe along the edges helps deter insects.

Note: Check class rules if you intend to compete wearing an ear net, as usage may be restricted to warm-up and schooling.

  • Fly wraps are mesh leg coverings designed to keep flies off a horse's legs and help reduce stomping.

  • Fly collars are covered with horse fly repellent to ward off flies, mosquitoes, and gnats from the horse's head and neck.

  • Fly sprays, fly wipes, and fly roll-ons are available in natural and synthetic formulas that repel flies, gnats, mosquitoes, ticks, and other insects. Ingredients may include organic pyrethrin, essential oils such as cedar, citronella, peppermint, or synthetic permethrin. These products prevent insects from landing but do not kill them.

Dover Saddlery recommends testing new fly sprays on a small area first. Apply to a clean horse, follow manufacturer directions, and rotate products over time to maintain effectiveness. Avoid spraying near fly predators.

  • Spot-On treatments, such as Farnam Equispot and Freedom 45, control and kill flies and other insects. Follow manufacturer instructions carefully.

  • Swat is a thick cream mixed with natural horse fly repellent, designed for sensitive areas such as the belly line and near open wounds.
