Before you begin, you’ll need a soft fabric measuring tape. Some manufacturers use head circumference in centimeters for their helmet sizing, some use inches or hat sizes and some use universal helmet sizing (XS–L). Additionally, helmet sizes vary between manufacturers.
- Place the tape measure snugly around your head at the widest point, about one inch above your eyebrows. Make sure the tape goes over the bump at the back of your head and that it is just above the top of your ears.
- Compare your head measurement to the manufacturer's helmet sizing chart for the brand you want. You can choose from schooling helmets to show helmets. If you plan to compete, consult your trainer for discipline guidance.
-
Place the helmet level on your head. Try helmets with your hair in the same style you ride. If your hair is long or thick you may need to size up slightly.
Note: Make hair as flat as possible; many riders use two hair nets to flatten a ponytail. For illustrated details see Hairstyling Tips for Equestrians. - Check helmet shape. Some helmets suit round heads, some oval. If a helmet squeezes your forehead but rocks sideways it’s too round; if it fits sides but rocks front-to-back it’s too oval.
Fit Checks
Check overall fit. A correctly sized helmet sits snugly on your head and covers your skull with equal pressure all around. No gaps. If it pops up it’s too small; if it slips and sits low it’s too large.
Helmet too small (popping up) | Helmet too big (sitting low)
Try to wiggle the helmet up and down — your forehead skin should move with it. Shake your head; the helmet should not pivot. If it does, it’s too large. If using an adjustable helmet, fine-tune with dials/padding. Otherwise try a different size or brand.
- Check the brim. The front brim should not sit more than two fingers’ width above your eyebrows and not lower than ½" above them.
- Adjust the chin strap. Strap should be snug under your chin but not so tight it’s uncomfortable or restricts swallowing. Many helmets include sliders for comfort around the ears.
A well-fitting helmet
Note: Head trauma is the leading cause of fatal horseback riding accidents — correct helmet fit is essential. These are general guidelines; same-sized helmets across different brands can fit differently.
Save your receipt and warranty information. Some manufacturers offer crash replacement discounts based on helmet age. For help or to request a catalog, call 1-800-406-8204 or visit DoverSaddlery.com.

Curious?
Hat sizes are calculated by dividing head circumference (in inches) by pi (3.14). Example: 22" ÷ 3.14 ≈ size 7.
