PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: Myler® Dee with Hooks Mullen Forward Tilt Ported Barrel MB 36

Myler® Stainless Steel 3 3/4" Dee with Hooks, MB 36 Mullen Forward Tilt Low Ported Barrel, Level 2-3. (3" Dee on pony sizes 4 1/4" and 4 1/2" mouthpieces).

The MB 36 is Myler’s alternative to a traditional mullen, but it has a wide low port that allows the tongue to pass under it comfortably. The port is 1" high and tilted forward at a 45° angle, allowing just enough room for the horse’s tongue to elevate slightly and swallow, but not high enough to create palate pressure. When reins are engaged, the MB 36 applies pressure primarily to the bars and lip, but also applies tongue pressure because of the forward tilt.

Key features:

  • Independent Side Movement™
  • Stainless steel mouthpiece.
  • Curved mouthpiece does not pinch lips or bars.
  • Copper inlay helps to promote salivation.

Notes:

  • This mouthpiece is a step up in tongue relief from Level 2, but because the port is low, it does not offer as much tongue relief as other Level 2-3 mouthpieces with slightly higher ports because the tongue is still somewhat restricted.
  • The MB 36 mouthpiece is similar to the MB 06, except that it is 1/4" higher and the port is tilted forward.
  • The MB 06 mouthpiece will apply less tongue pressure than the MB 36, but additionally offer less tongue relief when the reins are relaxed. For more overall tongue relief and less tongue pressure, see the 43LP.

The hooks make this a much more versatile version of the dee without hooks. Attaching the headstall to the top hook holds the bit in the correct position instead of allowing it to slide around the bridle cheek pieces. Attaching the reins to the rein hooks allows the rider to lift the cheek and use the Independent Side Movement of the mouthpiece. Using the hooks does not add leverage, but allows the rider to transition from a direct rein action to indirect action without changing the bit.

Adding a curb strap (using a Myler curb strap kit) incorporates curb pressure. Curb pressure is recommended for ported mouthpieces.

Action: Direct rein action when reins are not attached through rein hook. Indirect rein action when rein is fixed on rein hook.

Degree of Leverage: Little to no leverage when the hooks are used.
