Place your helmet between uses in a helmet bag, hat bag or hat box that will shield it from dust, scuffs and accidental impacts. Most of these storage options allow breathability. If your helmet is damp inside from perspiration or outside from rain, allow it to dry naturally, away from artificial heat sources, before placing it in its storage container.
Keep your helmet in a temperature-controlled environment, such as inside your home or inside a heated/air-conditioned tack room. Never leave your helmet in your car. Extreme heat and extreme cold compromise the integrity of the shock-absorbing materials necessary to protect your head. Some barn locations are not optimal places to store your helmet because fluctuating temperatures can degrade the materials meant to protect your head on impact.
Regular weekly cleaning reduces accumulated perspiration and grease buildup from your hair, both of which create unpleasant odors inside your helmet. Clean your helmet only with a product formulated specifically for the purpose, such as Charles Owen Hat Cleaner. Spray the interior of your helmet with the cleanser, let it sit for several minutes, and then wipe it clean with a damp cloth.
Never use household cleaners on your helmet and never run your helmet through a dishwasher. Harsh chemicals will destroy the effectiveness of the safety materials in the helmet.
Hairstyling Tips for Equestrians

If you have long or thick hair that you wear under your helmet, the length of your hair or the way you tie it up may change the way your helmet sits on your head. You want to be sure that your hair lies as flat to your head as possible under your helmet.
To achieve both a snug helmet fit and a neat appearance, consider using two hair nets and the method shown in this series of photos:
- 1) Hair and hair net are gathered into a ponytail holder. Note the traditional styling of the hair covering the top half of the ear.

2) Ponytail is laid as flat as possible against the head.

3) A second hair net is placed over the hair.

4) The rider tilts her head forward as she slides on the helmet. She puts the back part on first, with the harness settling over the ponytail holder, and works toward the front.

5) The rider tucks the hair and hair net over her forehead neatly in so that neither will show under the brim.

6) The helmet sits neatly and correctly on the rider's head.

If you fall from your horse and your helmet hits the ground, it should be replaced even if it looks intact. The materials designed to absorb the shocks of impact have done their job, and for your future protection, you need a new helmet.Helmet manufactures understand and are sympathetic to the financial concerns that may make you hesitant to replace a helmet that appears to be okay. With their expertise, they also know you should never ride again in a helmet that sustained a crash. For this reason, they all have helpful crash replacement policies to allow you to get a replacement helmet at a fraction of the cost in the event of a fall in which your helmet is impacted.
Generally, you will need to send a manufacturer your original sales receipt or paid invoice, an accident report form or letter explaining the incident, as well as the crashed helmet. Make sure, however, you follow the specific instructions for each manufacturer. The amount of your discount will depend on the age of your helmet before the crash. Always register any new helmet according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and retain your sales receipt.

Saddles and riding boots may be returned within the one year period, but are subject to a prorated refund based on usage. Used saddles may be returned for 30 days only.
