{"product_id":"sgt-reckless","title":"Sgt. Reckless","description":"Breyer® honors Sergeant Reckless with this rendition of the little Mongolian mare who became a decorated hero of the Korean War. Named “Reckless” by her platoon of 5th Marines, she began her military career as a simple pack horse—and ended it with the rank of Sergeant. Reckless carried heavy ammunition to Marines at the front lines as well as transported wounded soldiers back to safety. At the Battle of Outpost Vegas in March 1953, Reckless moved almost five tons of ammunition over the course of a few days through “no man’s land” to the front lines. Wounded twice, this brave mare was well loved by her Marines, and helped to raise their morale with her off-duty antics. She was awarded: two Purple Hearts, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation with star, Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Korean Service Medal and Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. This Traditional scale Breyer model wears her formal dress sheet which showcases these prestigious military awards. On her shoulder, a French Fourragere represents the award that her 5th Marines earned in World War I. Chevrons at the end of her name show her Staff Sergeant status. Sergeant Reckless was retired to Camp Pendleton in California, where she subsequently received her promotion to Staff Sergeant in 1959. A portion of the sales of this model goes to the Sergeant Reckless Memorial Fund, which is supporting efforts to create a permanent memorial to this beloved mare.
