Myler® Stainless Steel Western Dee with Hooks, MB 33 Medium Wide Ported Barrel, Level 3. Primarily used in Western disciplines.

The MB 33 is the mildest Myler mouthpiece in terms of tongue pressure. The generously wide port allows room for the tongue to pass almost completely under the bit. Because this mouthpiece does not rotate on to the tongue and the port is wide, it applies little to no tongue pressure, working primarily off the lips and bars. The port on this mouthpiece is 1 1/2" high, so it will apply little to no palate pressure.

Because the MB 33 offers such a high degree of tongue relief, the horse that goes well in this mouthpiece has a trustworthy and consistent disposition, and is trained to work off the leg and seat as well as the hands. Sweet iron mouthpiece oxidizes and encourages salivation.

Key features:

  • Independent Side Movement™.
  • Sweet iron mouthpiece.
  • Curved mouthpiece.
  • Copper inlay.

Notes:

  • For a slight increase in tongue pressure, see the MB 43LP or MB 43MP.
  • For same tongue relief without Independent Side Movement, see the MB 16 (Western only).
  • For the same tongue relief and Independent Side Movement, but with a slight degree of collapse, see the MB 05.
  • For more generous tongue relief, see the MB 16PB.

The western dee with hooks is a circular stainless steel ring with fixed attachment of the mouthpiece, with top and bottom rings (hooks) for headstall and rein attachment. The small loop behind the top slot accommodates a curb strap (attach with two curb hooks). The top bridle ring will fit standard 5/8" wide leather found on most headstalls. The bottom rein ring has recently been updated to fit slobber straps up to approximately 1 3/4". The knob on the top of the rein ring is for decoration—it has no function.

The hooks make this a much more versatile version of the dee without hooks. Attaching the headstall to the top hook holds the bit in the correct position instead of allowing it to slide around the bridle cheek pieces. Attaching the reins to the rein hooks allow the rider to lift the cheek and use the Independent Side Movement™ of the mouthpiece. Using the hooks does not add leverage but allows the rider to transition from a direct rein action to indirect action without changing the bit. Adding a curb strap (using a Myler curb strap kit) incorporates curb pressure. Curb pressure is recommended for ported mouthpieces.

Action: Direct rein action when reins are not attached through rein hook. Indirect rein action when rein is fixed on rein hook.

Degree of leverage: Little to no leverage when the hooks are used.
