Setting the stirrup at a 45 degree angle applies half the pressure across the shin and reduces leg burn, but will allows the rider to feel the stirrup leather.

At 90 degrees, the stirrups are performing at their maximum level with no pressure across the shin and leaves the iron completely open for retrieval.
